William Finch provides a high school program that prepares students to enter the workforce, enlist in the armed forces, and enroll in college.

Career Technical Education (CTE)

Music Technology Pathway

The Music Technology pathway will prepare students for college programs and/or careers in music engineering and production, post-production for film and television, and live sound-mixing. Students will gain a foundational knowledge in music theory and composition, as well as professional skills for audio engineering and sound editing.

Classes within the Music Technology Pathway:

• Digital Music Composition: Students will learn how to compose music on the computer using several types of digital music production software; as well as basic music theory and composition concepts.
• *Introduction to Recording Techniques: Broad overview of audio engineering fundamentals; including acoustics, microphones, signal flow, and digital audio workstations.
• *Digital Music Production: Digital Audio Workstations (Pro Tools). Mixing audio. Tools used by mixing engineers; including compressors, EQ, panning and reverb.

Digital Media Arts Pathway:

The Digital Arts Pathway will prepare students for college programs and/or careers in digital media arts, photography, and/or videography. Students will gain a foundational knowledge in digital arts with an emphasis on hands-on learning with professional photo and video equipment; as well as software.

Classes within Digital Media Arts Pathway:

• Digital Arts I: This exploratory course begins with an overview of medi arts fields and concludes with a focus on introductory photography; including camera functions and compositional techniques.
• Digital Arts II: This concentrator course explores the connection from photography techniques in their relation to graphic design and video editing. Students will use a variety of design software at an introductory level.
• Digital Arts III: This capstone course focuses on video editing. Students will apply the skills they’ve developed through the pathway in a series of video projects.

**Students enrolled in the Media Arts Pathway at William Finch Charter School get access to professional tools and creative spaces designed to support high-level media production.** This includes our Mac Studio Lab, full Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions (including Photoshop and Lightroom), and dedicated time to work on photo and video projects in our Media Room—featuring a 16-foot theater display and treated surround sound. Each student is provided with a DSLR Nikon camera for the year, with additional opportunities for photography field trips, industry tours, and media-related competitions.

Child Development: 

*CDF 12 Child, Family and Community: This course helps students understand how people learn to fit into society by looking at the roles of family, school, and community. It looks at how different parts of society affect a person’s growth. The course also shows how families, schools, and communities can work together to support children as they grow from birth to their teenage years.

*CDF 14 Child Growth and Development: This course looks at how children grow and

change in their bodies, thinking, social skills, and emotions from before birth through the teen years. It focuses on how both biology and the environment affect development. Students will watch and learn from real children, notice how each child is different, and study how kids grow at different ages using ideas from well-known development theories.

*Class may be taken for credit with Butte College and fulfills career requirement

• Individual or group therapy services with children and adult clients
• Participates in the intake process in the evaluation of problems presented and in the development of treatment plans with Mental Health and or other agencies as appropriate. 
• Gather data relative to client's personal, social and emotional history by interviewing client, relatives, friends, teacher, and employers. 
• Cooperates with other staff members and with community agencies in carrying out treatment plans. 
• Work as liaison to the County Mental Health Agency and any other contractual agencies in the county. 
• Participates in interagency services planning with the student team. 
• Interprets and explains to community groups the social aspects of environmental, emotional, and physical problems.

Jose Lopez will provide a wide range of support, including:

• Wellness promotion and behavioral health education

College Credit

Wm Finch Charter School works with Butte Community College for College Credit. Students will need to schedule an appointment with their independent study teacher and school counselor to begin the process of completing college courses for credits. College credit will be counted for both High School and College credits.

Acceleration

Requirements

Whenever a student completes graduation requirements early, the student:

1. May elect to graduate prior to the end of the academic year
2. May not participate in any extracurricular activities after mid-year graduation
3. May participate in graduation practice and ceremony at the principal’s discretion if a signed request from the parent/guardian has been received within two weeks of the end of the final semester of study.

Procedures

Procedures for Early/Mid-Year Graduation:

1. The parent(s)/guardian of a student may request early graduation for the student by filing a written request with the school principal two semesters prior to the start of their final semester of enrollment.
2. The principal, with a committee of school staff, considers the request and approves or denies graduation prior to one’s class on an individual case-by-case basis, subject to the criteria stated above.

Please note:  Once a student has decided to graduate early/mid-year, the student is only allowed to participate in the following school-sponsored activities in the spring semester: graduation rehearsal and the graduation ceremony.  

Summer School

Summer school is offered as credit recovery for high school students who are behind on High School credits. Summer school an independent study course offered  Online curriculum, and/or Textbook materials.

Senior Project:

Senior Project is a semester long class/project and graduation requirement. Senior Project is offered as a Career-Focused Class or Community Service for a Non-Profit Organization.

Option One:  

Career Focused Class

Students will research a career, based on their interests and inventories. They will gather information on their career of choice and formulate a presentation to share their career information to their audience consisting of peers, teachers, school board members and parents. In addition, students will gain knowledge in job seeking skills, such as filling out a job application, completing a resume and cover letter, and participating in a mock interview. This class meets 1 day a week in the Fall Semester.

Option Two: 

Community Service for a Non-Profit Organization

Students will complete 50 hours of community service at a Non-Profit organization approved by the Teacher. Students will be required to complete assignments throughout the duration of the 50 hours of community service and then compile and paper of the completed community service project and formulate a presentation to share their community service project to their audience consisting of peers, teachers, school board members and parents.

FAQs

Do I need to teach my child every day?

Yes—but you’re not alone. We’ll provide structure, tools, and regular teacher check-ins to help guide instruction and monitor progress.

What if I work and can’t teach during the day?

You can complete learning at your own pace and on your own schedule, as long as students meet weekly goals.

Can my child attend campus more often?

High School students have the option to come on campus for classes that are available on campus. Some options of classes available on campus are as follows: English, Math, Financial Literacy, Biology, and several Electives with limited spots available. All other subjects are taught at home. Students may come to campus for additional support by appointment with a staff member.
